最近NHKで、『赤毛のアン』のアニメが始まりました。

約120年前(1908年)にカナダの作家のL.M.モンゴメリ(1874-1942)によって書かれて、日本では、村岡花子さんの翻訳で、第二次対戦後1952(昭和27)年に出版されました。
日本では、戦後の復興期ではありましたが、まだ、孤児や生活に困った人達も多かった。元気に周りを変化させていく孤児のアン・シャーリーの話から元気をもらおうと小学校の教科書にも採用され、すぐに、アニメや漫画、絵本、映画にもなり、若い人から大人の人まで、大人気の物語となりました。
アン・シャーリーの人気は、日本だけではありません。世界中で今も愛されています。英語も読んでみてください。

Anne of Green Gables was published about 120 years ago by a Canadian writer, L.M. Montgomery (1874-1942). In Japan, it was published in 1952 (Showa 27) translated by Ms. Hanako Muraoka (1893-1968). It appeared in elementary school’s textbooks. Anne’s animations were introduced on TV programs. Cartoons, picture books, and movies were shown Anne’s stories. So, Anne of Green Gables, the story about Anne Shirly has been popular in Japan and in the world. Shall we learn about simple English through her conversations and her stories?

『赤毛のアン』は、赤ちゃんの時にお父さんもお母さんも亡くなって、孤児です。小さくて、貰われていく先々で、子供の世話をさせられたり、森の中で水汲みをして、それを運ばされたりしました。
そして、アンが11歳になった時、もう誰も貰い手がなくなって、孤児院に送られました。アンは赤毛で、そばかすだらけの顔で、痩せていましたから、赤毛で顔がかわいくないから貰い手がないのだと思っていました。
ところが、60代のマシューと50代の妹のマリラが、畑の助けと10歳くらいの男の子を孤児院からもらうように手続きしました。

 

しかし、男の子が送られて来たのではなく、女の子のアン・シャーリーでした。
男の子にかえてもらおうと思ったのですが、おしゃべりで、賢そうなアン・シャーリーを孤児院に帰さないで、マシューとマリラが育てることに決心しました。それは、マシューが「自分達ができることをしてあげよう」という決心からです。
それから５年間、いろいろな出来事がありました。アン・シャーリーと接しながら、マシューとマリラも新しい経験をし、３人と周りの人々、それぞれが、成長していく物語です。

 

Anne was an orphan because her parents died of sickness when she was very young. Since she did not have relatives around her, she was brought here and there. Even when she was very young, she had to work for the families who took care of her doing taking care of children, carrying water barrels from the woods, etc., as a child worker. When she became 11 years old, the families rejected her to stay at their homes and were sent to the orphanage. There was one request which an older brother Matthew Cuthbert and his sister Marilla Cuthbert who were single wanted to get the girl around 10-year-old. Actually, they wanted a boy who could work in the field to help Matthew, but the orphanage sent Anne to Cuthbert's brother and sister’s place. At first Marilla did not want Anne to be at Cuthbert's home, but she sympathized with Anne's life so she decided to adopt Anne since Mathew wanted to welcome Anne. The story of Anne of Green Gables is the happenings, which is about Anne Shirly’s developments, with Matthew and Marilla.

アン・シャーリーは、元気なあまり、いろいろな失敗をします。それらの失敗を通して、アン•シャーリーも、みんなも変わっていきます。

 

アンは、おしゃべりで、「赤毛」と言われると癇癪持ちで、怒ってしまうけれど、賢くて、やさしい女の子です。アンは、たくさんの失敗もしました。アンがどんな女の子か想像がつくと思います。

 

The following are Anne Shirly’s failures. Please imagine the interesting happenings.

 

1.「赤毛」と呼んだレイチェル夫人に「アン」は癇癪を起こしてしまった。
Anne got upset and screamed to Mrs. Rachel who told Anne who’s skinny with poor freckled and red haired carrots, and miserable girl. Because of Anne’s apology was successful and was accepted by Mrs. Rachel, Anne, Marilla, and Matthew were very happy. Since then, Mrs. Rachel supported Anne until the end of the story.

 

2.「にんじん」とからかった級友のギルバートの頭を石板で叩いてしまった。
Since handsome , favorable guy among classmates, Gilbert called Anne “Carrots! Carrots!” she hit her slate on Gilbert’s head and cracked the slate. After that, Anne did not accept Gilbert’s apology for 5 years which was until the end of the story of Anne of Green Gables.

 

3.マリラの母の形見の紫水晶が無くなり、ピクニックに行きたいので、嘘を言って、自分が無くしたと言った。
Marilla’s amethyst brooch had disappeared. Marilla thought that Anne took it because she was impressed by its beauty when Marilla showed her. Actually, Anne did not take it, but she wanted to go to the church’s picnic to have ice-cream, so she lied that she took it and got lost in the river. However, in the end, the brooch was found hanging on Marilla’s black lace shawl.

 

4.シロップのつもりでワインをすすめて、ダイアナを酔っぱらわせてしまった。
Anne got permission to invite Diana (best friend) to have a cup of tea. Anne made a mistake to recommend drinking currant wine instead of fruit juice while Diana was waiting to be served a cup of tea with cakes, she drank up one bottle of currant wine. Then she was drunk and became sick. Anne was punished by Diana’s mother, but Anne later rescued Diana’s younger sister Minnie May so Anne became a savior of her and was forgiven by Diana’s mother Mrs. Barry.

 

5.ダイアナの叔母様のジョセフィーンのベッドで眠ってられるところ飛び乗ってしまって、怒らせてしまった。（後で謝り、叔母様に気に入られ、大きくなり大学進学時、奨学金を提供された）
When Anne and Diana went to see the concert, they got home late. They wanted to enjoy sleeping in the gorgeous visitor’s room and two of the girls ran on the bed, but in the bed, there was a person already who was Diana’s aunt. They were scolded, but because Anne's explanation of the apology was very good, Aunt Josephine favored Anne calling Anne girl for her life.

 

6.アンが「森でお化けが出る話」を自分で作っただけだのに、森が怖くなって、歩けなくなった。（後で、マリラにその恐れをとってもらった〜恐れずにとにかく森をあることだった。）
Anne liked to create the stories, so she told Diana about the neighbor’s forest which had ghosts. This creative story made Anne and Diana scared so even Anne could not walk in that forest until Marilla pushed her to go into it so that made no scarred scenes find.

 

7.牧師夫妻を招待し、名誉なその席で、振る舞う菓子の香料を痛み止めの薬と間違えて、「毒入り」ケーキを焼いて、ご夫妻に出してしまう。
Anne and Marilla invited Pastor Allan and Mrs. Allan. Anne baked the cake, but she put Anodyne Liniment instead of Vanilla for nice smell.

 

8.意地悪なジョージー•パイに屋根の上をあるけるかと言われて、プライドで、屋根に登り歩き始めたが、すぐにバランスを崩し、屋根の上から落ちて、足を折って、学校を１ヶ月休むことになった。
Anne accepted Josie Pye’s challenge for her to walk on the top of the roof, the ridgepole of Mr. Barry’s kitchen roof. She did, but after a few steps of the ridgepole, she fell down on the ground. She broke her leg.

 

9.「赤毛」が嫌で、行商人から買った毛染めで、髪の毛を染めたら、緑色になってしまって、「赤毛」の方が良かったと泣いた。そして、緑の髪を短く切った。
Anne dyed her red hair to green hair having bought the bottle of hair dye from the peddler from Germany. He said that her hair would become beautiful raven-black hair, but it became miserably green and Marilla cut it short.

 

10.バリーの池で、エレイン姫になって小舟の中に横たわっていた。川の流れも早くなり、小舟に水が入り込み、沈み始めた。慌てて、助けを呼ぶが、誰にも声が届かず、幸い、橋桁のところに来て、慌てて、それに捕まったが、周りに誰もいなく、手が滑って、川に落ちそうになった所、幸い、ギルバートが通りかかり、助けてもらった。それでも、心からの感謝が言えないで、家に帰ってしまった。
Anne became an unfortunate Lily Maid while playing with her friends including Diana. Anne, whose part was Lily Maid, Elaine laid down in the flat. Anne enjoyed a romantic situation thinking about Lancelot and Guinevere and the King drifting down the river. However, the flat began to leak. Anne tried to escape, but the flat was in the middle of the river, fortunately, she could hold the bridge’s pile, and she was rescued by Gilbert fortunately.
