お笑い「パックンマックン」で有名なパックンこと、パトリック•ハーランさんはアメリカ人でハーバード大ご出身です。
最近、亡くなられた長嶋監督の英語のユーモアを紹介されています。

「I live in Tokyo.を過去形にしてください」という設問に、
「I live in Edo.」と答えられたとか、「ネバーギブアップをしない。」(I won’t never give up.)とかの言葉です。

それは、アメリカのレジェンド捕手ジョニーベンチが沢山の笑える名言を残しておられて「あのお店は混みすぎて誰も行かないんだよ。」(That restaurant is so crowded that nobody goes there.) だそうです。

二人は、野球と笑いの両方のタレントがあり、高く評価したいと言われています。

私たちもそういう明るさ、学びたいですね。

Pak-kun, whose real name is Patrick Harlan, is popular as a comedian and entertainer. He wrote in the Asahi Shimbun about the legendary former Yomiuri Giants manager, Shigeo Nagashima, and his amusing sayings. Pak-kun even compared Nagashima to the legendary catcher Johnny Bench, who was also famous for his witty remarks. For example, Bench once quipped, “The restaurant is so crowded that nobody goes there.”

Nagashima’s sayings are equally memorable. When asked to change the sentence “I live in Tokyo” to the past tense, instead of saying “I lived in Tokyo,” he answered, “I live in Edo.” Another classic example is his saying, “I won’t never give up,” mixing up the double negative for humorous effect.

There are many other funny sayings attributed to him. Instead of saying “muscle strain,” he once said, “meat, good-bye.” While he and his team were at an American baseball camp, he remarked that American children speak English very well. When he turned 60, he said, “This year I celebrated my 60th birthday for the first time.”

We should learn from his humorous way of speaking and enjoy life more.
