卒業生がエストニアに行ったと、「美しい絵はがき」をプレゼントしてくれた。

 

彼女の趣味の一つは、海外旅行先で美しい「絵はがき」を見つける事だそうです。私は、エストニアというと「エストニア出身把瑠都関」しか知りません。

 

インターネットでエストニアを調べると、Skypeの発祥の地で、IT技術と世界遺産の中世の旧市街が共存した魅力のある国だとありました。確かに、レンガ色の屋根と白い壁、ロシア風なとんがり屋根の塔、青いバルト海と空のコントラストが絵のように美しい写真ばかりでした。

She said that one of her hobbies is finding beautiful postcards from her travels abroad. Thinking about Estonia by myself, only I can recall “Baruto seki” of the big Sumo wrestler who was from Estonia.

 

Since I did not know about Estonia, I looked it up online. I found the birthplace of Skype, and a fascinating country where IT technology and a medieval old town were admitted as an old Heritage site. All the photos I could see on the Internet were like fairy tales which had brown colored roofs, white walls, Russian style pointed towers, the blue Baltic sea and blue sky. Those photos bring us very mixed romantic feelings.

7月27日の殿堂入りスピーチは、面白い中にも、学ぶことが沢山散りばめられていました。

その中から3つのお話です。

 

１：子供の頃はずっと野球がやれると思っていたけど、プロとしては45歳位まで。子供にとって、未来は終わりがなく広がっている。

 

２：「ゴール」と「夢」の違い。夢は見るだけで終わるかもしれない。ゴールは、目標設定と実現に向けての練習などの積み重ねが必要となる。

 

３：改善点は？失敗した点をよくみて、改善する。これを続けていけば目標が達成されると言っています。

 

From Ichiro’s Hall of Fame induction speech

 

Ichiro is a Nagoya native who played for the Seattle Mariners. His Hall of Fame induction speech on July 27th was entertaining but also packed with many educational lessons. Here are three of his stories.

 

1: When he was a kid, he thought that he could play baseball forever, but he only played professionally up to he was about 45. For children, the future is endless.

 

2: The differences between a “goal” and a “dream” are like “dreams may end up just being a dream, but goals require goal setting and actual achievement of repeated practice.

 

3: Achieving the goal needs to improve when we made some mistakes.Then continuation of practice brings your dream in true.

Umeko Tsuda, who is now on the 5,000 yen note, was a pioneer in the field of women’s education during the Meiji Era (1868–1912), when Japanese society was still deeply patriarchal.

 

When she was just six years old, Umeko was sent to the U.S. as a member of the first group of women to study abroad when she was just six years old in 1871. She studied in the United States for a total of 13 years and when she returned to Japan she ambitiously sought to improve the status and education of Japanese women. Thanks to the generosity of American donors and her own tenacity, Umeko eventually founded a women’s college, Joshi Eigaku Juku (now Tsuda University).

 

The university specializes in teaching and research in education studies and liberal arts, particularly English.

 

Umeko Tsuda’s strong personality and her fierce determination to give women an equal footing in Japan has left an indelible mark on Japanese education and society.
