『Feliz Navidad（フェリス・ナビダ）』は、プエルトリコ出身の歌手ホセ・フェリシアーノが作った、とても明るくて元気になるクリスマスソングです。

 

歌詞はとてもシンプルで、「クリスマスおめでとう。新年おめでとう」というメッセージが繰り返されるだけですが、この曲には実は“心温まるストーリー”が隠れています。

 

アメリカに移り住んだフェリシアーノは、クリスマスが来るたびに、故郷プエルトリコのにぎやかで温かいクリスマスを思い出していました。アメリカで過ごす冬は静かで、どこか寂しいもの。そこで彼は「遠く離れた大切な人たちに、気持ちを届けたい」と思い、たった一つの願いを歌に込めました。

その願いとは、
“どうかあなたが幸せでありますように。”
短いメッセージですが、この言葉には大切な人への想いがぎゅっと詰まっています。

また、この歌がスペイン語と英語をまぜて歌われているのにも意味があります。
フェリシアーノは、文化や言葉が違っても、人々が同じ気持ちで喜びを分かち合えるようにと願ったのです。そのため『Feliz Navidad』は、世界中の人が国境を越えて一緒に歌える曲になりました。

The Juggler of Notre Dame —

 

Once upon a time—yes, in the Middle Ages of France—there was a very poor man who was good at juggling and street performing. People called him “the juggler.” He made others laugh and brought joy to many people with his simple tricks.

 

After he joined a monastery, however, he began to feel troubled. The other monks could write beautiful poems, sing wonderful songs, or paint pictures as gifts to Mary. But the juggler could not read, he could not write songs, and he could not paint.

 

“I have nothing to offer… nothing at all,” he thought sadly.

 

One day, he suddenly realized something: “I *can* perform. Maybe I can give my art with all my heart.”

 

That night, when no one else was in the chapel, he stood in front of the statue of Mary. Then he began to perform the very best juggling he had ever done. He jumped, spun, and sent the balls into the air. His movements were more beautiful than ever, filled with honesty and pure heart.

 

A few monks happened to see him and shouted, “What are you doing? Stop that!” But at that very moment, something amazing happened.

 

The statue of Mary gently smiled. It was as if she understood the juggler’s true heart.

 

The juggler fell quietly to the floor. For the first time in his life, he felt truly accepted. With a peaceful smile, he passed away.

 

This story may look religious at first, but the miracle itself is not the main point.

 

The important messages of the story are these:
● People can make others happy with the gifts they already have.
● What matters most is not the size of your talent, but the love in your heart.
● You do not need to compare yourself with others. Do your best in your own way.
● A sincere heart always reaches someone — and can even save you.

 

This is why *The Juggler of Notre Dame* is a story that touches everyone, not only Christians. The juggler did not have special powers, but his honest and wholehearted way of living was the most beautiful gift of all.

クリスマスになると、イエス様の誕生•馬小屋•イエス様のお母様のマリア様、お父様のヨゼフ様などのお話が一杯出てきます。

今日は、フランスの街ではよく見かけた「道化師」のお話です。

フランスですから、書かれた時代でも、今でも、歴史的にも教会/聖堂はあちこちにあったのです。
自分のできる事で一生生きていった道化師の思いを感じて下さい。

 

昔々、といっても中世のフランスのお話です。ある修道院に、ジャングル（大道芸）をするのが得意な、とても貧しい男の人がやってきました。

 

彼の名は“道化師”。みんなを笑わせたり、元気にしたりする芸で生活していた人でした。

 

けれど修道院に入ってから、彼は悩みはじめます。他の修道士たちは、立派な詩を書いたり、美しい歌をうたったり、絵を奉納したりと、みんな自分の才能で“何かを捧げる”ことができました。でも道化師は、字も読めず、歌も作れず、絵も描けません。「自分には、何も捧げられるものがない……」と落ち込んでしまったのです。

 

しかし、ある日ふと気づきます。「ぼくは芸ができる。だったら、それを心をこめて捧げよう。」

 

夜、誰もいない聖堂で、道化師はマリア像の前に立ちました。そして、いま自分にできる最高の芸を、全身全霊で披露しはじめたのです。跳ね、回り、宙に舞うボール。彼の動きは、これまでで一番美しく、一番まっすぐな心で満ちていました。

 

修道士たちはたまたまその様子を見て驚きます。「なにをしているんだ！」と止めようとしたそのとき、不思議なことが起こりました。マリア像の表情が、ふっと優しく微笑んだのです。まるで、道化師の心を受け止めたかのように。

 

道化師はそのまま静かに倒れこみました。彼は、自分の人生で初めて、心から“受け入れられた”と感じながら、穏やかに息を引き取ったのです。

 

このお話は一見、宗教的に見えるかもしれません。

でも大事なのは、“マリア様”の奇跡そのものではありません。
大切なのは、道化師が教えてくれる次のことです。

 

●人は、持っている力で人を喜ばせることができる。
●才能の大きさより、その人の“心のこめ方”が尊い。
●他人と比べる必要はない。自分にできることを精いっぱいやればいい。
●真心は、必ず誰かに届き、自分自身を救う力になる。

 

だから『神の道化師』は、クリスチャンでなくても心に響く物語なのです。道化師は、特別な力を持っていたわけではありません。

けれど、一生懸命に生きる姿、その誠実さこそが、何よりも美しい“贈り物”だったのです。

December has come. Christmas is just around the corner.
Do you know where the Christmas celebration began?

 

About 800 years ago, in a small town in Italy called Assisi, there lived a young man named Francis. He is now known as Francis of Assisi.

Francis was born into a rich family. His father was a cloth merchant. Francis loved singing and was kind to everyone. When he grew up, he enjoyed spending time with his friends and often paid for them.

 

At that time, many wars were going on in Europe. Francis went to war, but he was captured, became sick, and finally returned home. After this, his life completely changed.

 

He began to help poor and sick people. He gave away his father's cloth and used the money to help others. His father became very angry, and they went to court. Francis took off all his clothes, returned them to his father, and left his home to live without money.

 

Francis repaired old churches and cared for sick people. Many people were moved by his life and joined him. He lived by these words:

 

“Instead of being comforted, comfort others.
Instead of being understood, understand others.
Instead of being loved, love others.”

 

One Christmas, Francis made a small stable with a baby doll and animals. Everyone celebrated together in a warm and peaceful way. This is said to be the beginning of the Christmas nativity scene.

 

At that same time, Japan was changing from the Heian period to the Kamakura period. From a small town in Europe, the spirit of Christmas slowly spread around the world.

12月になりました。クリスマスが、もうすぐそこまで来ていますね。
さて、クリスマスのお祝いは、いつ、どこで始まったのでしょうか。

 

今から800年ほど前、イタリアのアッシジという小さな町に、フランシスコという青年がいました。のちに「アッシジのフランチェスコ」と呼ばれる人です。

フランシスコの家はとても裕福で、お父さんは外国から布を輸入して売る大きな商人でした。フランシスコは歌が好きで、明るく心のやさしい若者でした。お金持ちだったので、友だちとよく遊び、みんなの支払いも自分がしていたそうです。

 

当時のヨーロッパは戦争の多い時代でした。フランシスコも戦争に行きましたが、敵に捕まり、牢屋に入れられ、病気にもなってしまいます。ようやく家に帰ることができましたが、このつらい経験が、彼の生き方を大きく変えました。

 

フランシスコは、困っている人や病気の人を助けるようになり、家の布を人にあげたり、売ってそのお金を貧しい人に使ったりしました。しかし、お父さんはそれを許さず、ついに裁判になります。フランシスコはその場で服もすべて脱いで父に返し、家を出て、何も持たずに生きる道を選びました。

 

それからフランシスコは、壊れた教会を直したり、病気の人の世話をしたりしました。彼の生き方に心を打たれ、一緒に生きる仲間も増えていきました。フランシスコは、こんな言葉を大切にしていました。

 

「慰められるより、慰めることを
理解されるより、理解することを
愛されるより、愛することを」

 

ある年のクリスマス、フランシスコは馬小屋を作り、赤ちゃんの人形や、馬や羊を置いて、みんなであたたかくお祝いをしました。これが、今のクリスマスの飾りの始まりだと言われています。

 

この頃の日本は、ちょうど平安時代から鎌倉時代に変わるころでした。

遠く離れたヨーロッパの小さな町から、クリスマスのお祝いは、少しずつ世界に広がっていったのです。

日本人の場合、大体普通、第二外語ができるという場合、英語だと思います。

日本語の他に、日本語と同じように語学が話せて書けるということはいいことがたくさんあります。

 

１）外国の人と意思疎通ができるというだけでなく、考え方や可能性を広げ、異文化理解を深めます。

２）脳機能を活発にさせ、記憶力、問題解決能力、想像力を高め、思考を柔軟にし、認知機能の衰えを緩やかにします。

３）ブルーバル化の進就職市場に老いて、教育や職業選択肢を広げます。

４）言語を学ぶには多くの忍耐力、粘り強さ、集中力を要しますから、その学習力は、人生の多くの分野に良い影響を与えます。

 

そのように、第二外語ができること、バリリンガルになることは「知的能力の向上」、「職業選択可能性の拡大」、「異文化理解促進」、「より深い旅行体験」、「人格形成」そして、共感力のある「グルーバル市民」になるための不可欠な要素でもあります。

 

話は、ちょっと固くなりましたが、例えば、先日、結婚式に参加させていただきました。素晴らしいお二人の人生スタートのショーでした。

お二人が選ばれた音楽がずっと流されていたのですが、その中の一つに、Eric Clapton のTears in Heavenがありました。この曲は、EricClaptonの愛する２歳になったばかりのコナー君が事故で亡くなりその時に作られた曲です。

その曲は、

Would you know my name, if I saw you in heaven?
Would it be the same, if I say you in heaven?
I must be strong and carry on, ‘cause I know I don’t belong here in heaven.

Would you hold my hand, if I saw you in heaven?
Would you help me stand, if I saw you in heaven?

上の２つのパラグラフは大体問題なく、内容がわかると思います。
次のパラグラフは、上の２つとは異なり、youというのは、一般的な「人」、「クラプトン」のことを言っています。

時は、人をうちのめすことがある
Time can bend your knees

時は、人をひざまずかせる（逆らえなくなる）事がある
Time can break your heart

時は、人の心を打ち砕くことがある
Have you begging please,Begging please. 

そして時は、人に「お願いだ」と懇願しなければならない状態に追い込まれる事もある。

 

この言葉の意味が深くわかるには、クラプトンの人生・生活状況と、西洋と日本の文化の違い、神や罪や自責の念などの違いがわからないと、なかなか、理解できにくいと思います。

 

なので第二言語（英語でも他言語でも）学び続けて下さい。
